How to Choose a Bill Splitting App: Six Questions First

Bill splitting tools rarely differ on feature count; they differ on whether your friends will open the thing. Most groups abandon one because somebody refused to install an app, the foreign currency maths drifted, or nobody could tell who owed whom at the end. Here are the six questions worth asking, and how Mr.Splitter answers each — limits included.

Six questions to ask of any splitting tool

1. Does everyone need to install an app?

Requiring every friend to install something new is the most common failure point. Mr.Splitter is a PWA: open it in a browser, sign in with LINE or Google, and add it to your home screen if you want the app feel.

2. How is foreign currency handled?

Check whether the tool discards the rate after converting or stores it. Mr.Splitter converts at the rate on the day you logged the expense and keeps that rate, so later market moves never rewrite past entries.

3. Does it give balances or actual transfer instructions?

A list of balances still leaves you working out the payments. Mr.Splitter nets everyone out and outputs the minimum set of transfers, which matters more the larger the group.

4. Can splits be uneven?

Someone skipped the meal, someone ordered the expensive thing. You need to exclude people per expense and overwrite individual amounts directly. Even-split-only tools run out of road quickly.

5. How many taps does logging take?

The higher the cost of logging, the less it happens. Mr.Splitter accepts plain messages to a LINE Bot such as "dinner 500", and photographed receipts become AI drafts (free: 10 per month, Pro: 50 per month).

6. Can you take your data out?

Check for export. Mr.Splitter exports transactions, applied rates, and settlement results to Excel rather than locking the history in the platform.

Trade-offs between common approaches

No single approach wins everywhere. Choose by group size, currencies, and whether the expenses repeat.

ScenarioMr.SplitterManual spreadsheet
Two people, one currency, one-off
Works, though manual is fine too
Perfectly adequate, lowest overhead
Four or more people fronting money
Automatic netting and minimum transfers
Worked out by hand, error-prone
Multi-currency travel
Original currency, day rate, rate retained
Look up and record rates yourself
Recurring monthly (flatshare)
Fixed expenses set once, keep recording
Copy a fresh sheet every month
Everyone needs edit access
Each person signs in, synced live
Shared file plus version discipline
Fully offline
Sync needs a connection (installable as a PWA)
A local file edits offline

Three steps from nothing

1. Create a group, share the link

Sign in with LINE or Google, create the group, and paste the link or QR code into the chat you already use. Members join by signing in — no new account. The free tier allows up to 20 members per group.

2. Log as you go, pick who shares

Each expense records a payer and the people sharing it. Enter foreign currency in the original currency. You can also message the LINE Bot "dinner 500", or photograph a receipt and confirm the AI draft.

3. Settle and keep the record

At the end you get each person's net position and the minimum transfer set. Mark transfers as settled, and export the whole history to Excel if you need it on file.

Bill splitting FAQ

What is the difference between a bill splitting app and an expense tracker?+
An expense tracker answers "how much did I spend"; a splitting app answers "who owes whom between us". The second needs two extra fields on every entry — who paid and who shares it — and a final step that nets the debts against each other. Mr.Splitter does both: group splitting and personal tracking live under one account, and your personal entries are not visible to group members.
Does everyone have to register?+
Anyone logging expenses or viewing the settlement signs in with LINE or Google; there is no separate account to create. If a member will not sign in, add them as an unregistered member so someone else can record on their behalf — they still appear in the settlement.
What does "minimum transfers" mean and why does it matter?+
With four people fronting money for each other, settling pair by pair can mean up to six transfers. Netting each person to a single position first usually brings that down to two or three. The gap grows with group size, and what you actually save is transfer fees and the back-and-forth of confirming each payment. See the minimum transfer settlement page for the method.
What separates the free tier from Pro?+
Free: join 30 groups, create 10, up to 20 members per group, 10 AI entries and 1 AI image per month, unlimited expenses. Pro at NT$40/month: unlimited groups, 50 members per group, 50 AI entries and 5 AI images per month, and no ads. Splitting, currency conversion, settlement, and Excel export are all available on the free tier.
Is my data safe, and can I delete it?+
Traffic runs over HTTPS and sign-in goes through LINE or Google OAuth, so we never hold your third-party password. You can export your data and request account deletion. Retention periods and handling are set out on the privacy policy page.
Does Mr.Splitter handle the money?+
No. Mr.Splitter only calculates who should pay whom. The transfers themselves happen through your own bank or payment app; the platform does not collect or disburse funds.
