What group travel splitting actually needs

Everyone can front money

You book the flights, someone else pays the guesthouse, a third person covers dinner. Each expense records who paid and who shares it, so people who skipped an activity are not charged for it.

Foreign currency at the day's rate

Enter JPY, KRW, THB, or EUR in the original currency. It converts to the group currency using that day's rate and stores the rate, so later rate moves never change a past expense.

Settle in the fewest transfers

Four people fronting money for each other can produce six separate debts. Mr.Splitter nets everyone out first, then outputs the minimum set of transfers — usually two or three.

Photograph receipts into drafts

A worked example: four people, five days in Japan

Log what each person fronted

Zhe pays ¥48,000 for the guesthouse, Mei pays ¥12,000 for JR tickets, Zhe also pays ¥16,000 for yakiniku, Kai pays ¥4,000 for entry tickets, and Ting fronts nothing. All four expenses are shared evenly, totalling ¥80,000.

Convert and net out

At that day's rate of 1 JPY = 0.21 TWD the trip is about NT$16,800, so each person owes ¥20,000 (roughly NT$4,200). Net positions: Zhe +¥44,000, Mei −¥8,000, Kai −¥16,000, Ting −¥20,000.

Settle with three transfers

Mei sends Zhe ¥8,000, Kai sends Zhe ¥16,000, Ting sends Zhe ¥20,000. Three transfers close the trip instead of everyone reconciling with everyone. Amounts can be shown in JPY or your home currency.

Travel splitting FAQ

Which day's exchange rate is used?+
The rate on the day you record the expense. Mr.Splitter stores that rate with the expense, so later currency moves never retroactively change what someone owes — everyone sees the same numbers at settlement. If you would rather use one rate for the whole trip, set the group currency to the foreign currency and convert once at the end.
Someone joins halfway through the trip. How does that work?+
Tick only the people who actually share each expense. The first three nights of accommodation stay with the original members; expenses from day four include the new person. You do not need a second group.
We ate different things at the same meal. Can the split be uneven?+
Yes. It starts from an even split, and you can overwrite any single amount — set one to ¥1,800 and lock it, and the rest redistributes. Anyone who did not eat can be excluded entirely.
Does everyone have to register?+
Anyone who wants to log expenses or see the settlement signs in with LINE or Google — there is no separate account to create. For someone who would rather not sign in, add them as an unregistered member and record on their behalf; they are still included in the settlement.
Is the free tier enough for one trip?+
Usually. The free tier lets you join 30 groups, create 10 of your own, and have up to 20 members per group, with no cap on the number of expenses. Pro at NT$40/month raises this to unlimited groups, 50 members per group, 50 AI entries per month, and removes ads.
Can I still look up the trip afterwards?+
Yes. The group stays available, including every expense, the rate applied at the time, and the settlement result, and you can export it all to Excel.
