Multi-Currency Travel Expense Tutorial: Manage Yen, Dollars, and More!
The most frustrating part of traveling abroad is currency conversion. Master this technique to make your travel expense tracking easy and accurate!
Why Multi-Currency Tracking?
When traveling abroad, you might use various currencies:
- Local Currency — For flights, pre-booked activities
- USD — Credit card hotel bookings, international platforms
- JPY/EUR/etc. — Local restaurants, transportation, shopping
Step 1: Enable Currencies in Group Settings
Setup Steps
- 1. Go to group page, tap "Settings" in the top right
- 2. Find "Currency Settings"
- 3. Enable all currencies you'll use during the trip
- 4. Select a "Primary Currency" for settlement (usually your home currency)
Step 2: Set Exchange Rates
After enabling currencies, you can choose:
Auto Exchange Rate
- • System fetches daily rates automatically
- • Perfect for those who don't want hassle
- • Rates update over time
Custom Rate
- • Set based on your actual exchange rate
- • More precise calculations
- • Adjust anytime
Step 3: Record in the Currency You Paid
This is the most important principle!
Recording Examples
✈️
Flight $500
Paid in USD → Record in USD
🏨
Hotel €300
Booking.com in EUR → Record in EUR
🍜
Ramen ¥1,200
Paid cash in Japan → Record in JPY
The system automatically converts all expenses to your primary currency for settlement. No manual calculations needed!
Master multi-currency tracking and make your travel expense splitting super easy!
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q1. Which currencies does Mr.Splitter support?
- It supports 30+ major currencies including TWD, USD, JPY, EUR, CNY, HKD, THB, VND, KRW, GBP and more. Rates update daily.
- Q2. Are exchange rates real-time?
- Yes. Mr.Splitter pulls public FX data daily and stamps every transaction with the day's rate. If you want to lock in your actual exchange cost (e.g. airport rate), you can set a custom rate in group settings.
- Q3. Can one group use multiple currencies at once?
- Yes. Each transaction picks its own currency, and at settlement everything converts to the group's base currency. E.g. a TWD-base group can log JPY expenses during a Japan trip and settle in TWD on return.
- Q4. Should I use the system rate or a custom rate?
- Depends. For airport cash or card-rate accuracy, use a custom rate (closer to real cost). For ordinary credit card transactions, use the system rate (neutral and verifiable). Mr.Splitter supports both — switch as needed.
