Multi-Currency Bill Splitting — Mr.Splitter

JPY in Japan, KRW in Korea, EUR in Europe — log each expense in its native currency. Mr.Splitter auto-converts to the group's primary currency in real time, and stores that day's rate so the ledger stays consistent later.

Five things multi-currency does well

28+ currencies supported

TWD, USD, JPY, EUR, CNY, HKD, THB, VND, KRW, SGD, MYR, IDR, PHP, AUD, CAD, GBP, CHF, NZD, INR, AED, SAR, ZAR, TRY, MXN, BRL, ARS, CLP, and more. Major Asian, North American, and European currencies are covered.

Real-time auto conversion

Log in the local currency (JPY) and the app converts to your group's primary currency (e.g., TWD) using the current real-time rate. The converted amount is displayed on entry so you can sanity-check on the spot.

Day-rate stored per transaction

Each transaction snapshots the exchange rate at the moment it was logged. Two weeks later when you settle, the ledger uses each day's actual rate — so exchange rate movement after the fact never re-writes history.

Mixed-currency groups, naturally

The same group can contain JPY, TWD, USD, and SGD transactions simultaneously. Settlement consolidates everything into the group's primary currency, so each member sees one number: "you owe / are owed X TWD".

Custom (locked) exchange rates

Pre-trip cash exchange at a fixed rate? Override the auto rate per group or per transaction, and all matching-currency transactions use your locked rate. Useful for cash-heavy trips and post-trip reconciliation.

Multi-currency feature comparison

Multi-currency is table stakes for bill-splitting tools, but the details differ. The key dimensions: auto rate, day-rate retention, custom rates, and Excel export with rate columns.

Three scenarios where multi-currency pays off

10-day Japan + Korea combined trip

5 days in Tokyo (JPY), 5 days in Seoul (KRW), plus USD purchases at airport stops. One group, three currencies — Mr.Splitter handles it natively. Log in local currency, settle in your home currency. Lock JPY and KRW rates pre-trip to avoid rate-movement disputes later.

Cross-border business trip

One week across SGD / HKD / MYR for three Southeast Asia cities; you front expenses for colleagues. Each row exported to Excel shows the original amount, currency, day-rate, and home-currency conversion — drop straight into the company expense form.

Living abroad / cross-border household

Living in Japan but earning rental income in Taiwan. Mr.Splitter's personal expense tracking handles JPY daily expenses and TWD recurring income; the monthly summary consolidates to a single currency. Asset tracking computes net worth across currencies as well.

Multi-currency — FAQ

Which currencies are supported?+
TWD, USD, JPY, EUR, CNY, HKD, THB, VND, KRW, SGD, MYR, IDR, PHP, AUD, CAD, GBP, CHF, NZD, INR, AED, SAR, ZAR, TRY, MXN, BRL, ARS, CLP, and a few more. If the currency you need isn't in the list, you can use "custom rate" to manually set a baseline conversion.
Where do exchange rates come from?+
We pull from public real-time rate sources, refreshed multiple times per day. The displayed conversion uses the most recent refresh. Bank wire-transfer rates may differ by a small spread. To use a specific rate (e.g., the cash-exchange rate from your trip), use custom rate to lock it in.
How do custom rates work?+
Set a custom rate at the group or transaction level (e.g., "JPY → TWD at 0.21"). Once set, all transactions in that group / matching that pair use the locked rate instead of the auto rate. Ideal for pre-trip cash exchange or matching your bank's rate.
If rates move during my trip, will already-logged transactions change?+
No. Each transaction locks the rate at logging time. Future rate movement does not retroactively alter past transactions. History always reflects "the day-rate at logging time" — so reconciliation stays reproducible.
Does the Excel export include rate info?+
Yes. Each Excel row includes original amount, original currency, day-rate, and the converted home-currency value. Ready to paste into company expense systems or accounting tools.
Can I change the group's primary currency later?+
Yes. After changing it, all historical transactions re-convert using each one's saved day-rate. For transactions that were originally entered in the primary currency (and have no day-rate), they'll use today's real-time rate as fallback.
Splitwise / Tricount also handle multi-currency — what's different?+
Splitwise supports 100+ currencies, more than Mr.Splitter's 28+. For mainstream Asia / North America / Europe trips, both work. For exotic small-country currencies, Splitwise has broader coverage. For mainstream Asian use cases, the difference is negligible.
